Travel Journal

An early 20th century adventurer brings back a set of images from his travels, indicating the exact coordinates he visited. But is this travel journal a true representation of his experience? Caves have become desolate lunarscapes, lava has been transformed into glaciers, and bodies of water appear iridescent. The line between a landscape and a dreamscape becomes blurred as we begin to question this voyager as a documentarian.

Photography was still coming into its own during this time-period, and what a traveler brought back would most certainly look very different from what he actually witnessed. But going one step further - do our memories truly represent our experiences or are they manifestations that we continuously mold and re-form as we move through life?

The narrative presented in this portfolio alludes to multiple journeys — an explorer of physical space, the path our memories take in ourselves over time, and the evolution of the medium of photography itself. Each image is printed on UV-resistant newsprint in an edition of 1, with 2 artist's proofs.
